Child sexual exploitation

Often shortened to CSE, but what is it?

It’s a form of child sexual abuse, when a child or young person is targeted by a person or group of people in a position of power. They use this power to FORCE, MANIPULATE, PRESSURE, TRICK or COERCE a young person into sexual activity.

CSE can include contact or non-contact sexual activity and can occur online, in person or a combination of both.

It can be a one off or a series of incidents and can happen to anyone regardless of ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation. It can also be carried out by anyone, including people of the same age or by people close to the young person.

Lets find out more…

Grooming is a form of CSE. This is when someone builds trust and makes a connection with a young person to get them to do something sexual or illegal.

Grooming can happen to anyone.

A young person could be groomed by someone they know, by a stranger or by a person they met online.

The person could be older, the same age, or even someone who’s in a position of trust and authority.

Groomers may use tactics like:

  • Pretending to be younger.
  • Give advice.
  • Show understanding.
  • Buy gifts.
  • Give attention.
  • Taking the young person on trips, outings or even on holiday.

There are lots of reasons someone may not feel comfortable to speak out about CSE, these may include:

  • Not knowing that it is abuse.
  • Believing that they are in love.
  • Admiration for the groomer.
  • Protection for the groomer.
  • Shame and Fear.
