Positive masculinity

Masculinity is a set of attributes, behaviours and roles associated with men. They validate maleness and involve being recognised in a particular way by other men and women.

Positive Masculinity is a set of characteristics that encourage men to break free from the stereotypes of gender roles and identity and instead engage in non-violent, non-sexist or homophobic behaviour. It emphasises that men don’t have to conform to societal norms, that they should be free to feel and to nurture qualities such as empathy, compassion and kindness.

Positive Masculinity isn’t talked about so much, the media tends to focus on the term toxic masculinity.

Toxic Masculinity is the opposite to positive masculinity. It’s a term used to describe stereotypical male behaviour.

Lets find out a more…

Why does it matter?

Embracing positive masculinity doesn’t mean denying masculinity, it involves redefining it in a way that benefits men and society as a whole.

It can lead to…

Better mental health- toxic masculinity can negatively affect, anxiety and depression in men as well as increasing the risk of suicide.

Healthier Relationships- as it encourages empathy, emotional intelligence an open communication.

Reduces toxic behaviour- such as aggression, dominance and emotion suppression.

Personal Fulfilment- as men who prioritise self-awareness, vulnerability and compassion often experience greater personal fulfilment, connect with others more deeply and with their emotion and find purpose beyond traditional gender roles.

Role Modelling- as positive masculinity sets a positive example to other men. When men demonstrate kindness, respect and emotional openness, they inspire others to do the same.

Gender Equality-  positive masculinity challenges rigid gender norms and support gender equality.

We need to work together to reduce the stigma around mental illness and what it is to be a man.

We need to remind men that asking for help is ok, expressing emotion and seeking support is not just ok it is necessary.
