relationships

A relationship is the connection you have to a person, place or thing.

There are many types of relationships: family, friends, professional, romantic and sexual.

You can have a connection/ relationship with a blanket or teddy from when you were a baby or a gift from a partner.

All relationships are fluid- they change and develop.

There are characteristics that make a positive or healthy relationship.

These may include…

Romantic relationships can be tricky to navigate and often we can lose sight of our own values and beliefs.

We may start to place more value on the other person in the relationship rather than ourselves.

Here’s a handy checklist from the BBC. Try to answer honestly, if there is any doubt or niggle when responding to any of the questions don’t dismiss it, think about what’s been happening to make you feel that way.

Ask a friend or speak to one of the SOS team to explore your answers.

  1. Do you have complete trust in each other?
  2. Do you share mutual interests?
  3. Do you enjoy spending time together and having a laugh?
  4. Do you have a good balance between time spent as a couple and time alone or doing things with friends?
  5. Do you feel a connection and a common understanding between you?
  6. Do you communicate openly and honestly with each other?
  7. Do you feel the interest and effort goes both ways?
  8. Do you feel able to discuss what you like and don’t like about the relationships and have difficult conversations?
  9. Does your relationship feel pressured and forced? You should never feel pressured or forced into anything in a relationship

Being in an unhealthy relationship can be difficult, it can affect how you feel about yourself and your other relationship.

Being in an unhealthy relationship can lead to low self-worth, anxiety and poor mental health which may result in unhealthy coping strategies.

Remember relationships should be healthy and made up of…
